Farmer's Story
After purchasing a very poor soil-quality property comprising approximately 300 acres of bare earth with scattered weeds and 300 acres of bush in early 2019, we decided to raise Angora goats in 2022 because they are very gentle on our fragile soils, excellent at converting weeds into fibre, and are the world's most efficient fibre-producing animals. The Angora goats have been husbanded without chemical inputs since they arrived, we have improved their foraging options with multi-species pastures and limited grazing of native scrub, and we achieved certified organic status two years ago, along with certified Responsible Mohair Standard. We follow the genetic selection and gain principles embodies in the work of the late Dr Jim Watts and are members of SRS Genetics. We practise no till, no cull, and no cropping, and have grown our original 23 Angora goat herd to over 200, with 156% kidding rates, and first shearing mohair fleeces of 15-18 micron. About 50% of our goats are poll (born without horns). Currently we harvest about 500kg of mohair per year and supply local and interstate extensive farms as well as hobby farmers with Angora goats for fire-hazard reduction, as pets, to complement merino enterprises, or to start their own mohair production.
